The Weekly Outlook 09
Your oracle card pull for the week ahead, finding my own roots and how to master layering this spring.
Welcome to The Weekly Outlook, a tarot pull, a roundup of my favorite things + much more. Delivered every Monday morning to kick-start your week.
Happy Monday!
I have a ton on my plate this week, so of course I get sick…again. Ahhh spring. Soccer and baseball start back up for my kids, therapy, events, and more. I’m also going to try my hand at a few new recipes this week - once I’m not leaving trails of tissues everywhere I go. This waffle recipe for my kids looks super easy, and we just got a waffle iron and also this pasta sauce for later in the week!
This week’s outlook delivers a tarot card that I’ve never pulled before, how as an adoptee I found lots of information on my ancestry this past week, and the art of light layering - how to ditch your winter coat and embrace spring even when it’s still chilly.
Let’s get into your outlook!
Tarot/Oracle Pull for Your Week
I have never pulled this card before - which is kind of crazy! Introducing Justice.
“With tails entwined, two cats look directly at you…waiting for you to choose between them. Which is right and which is wrong? The Justice card implies a weight or heaviness surrounding a choice you have to make. Now is not the time to shun the concept of divine balance, or karma. All of your choices affect your life, and sometimes the lives of those around you, both now and in the future.”
This card perfectly fits a situation I find myself in currently. How about you? Before making any kind of big-time decision, it’s always important to be patient and think about the impact it will have on your life and others around you. It will ripple and change even the tiniest things. Will it be for the positive or the negative?
Take your time. Do not rush.
Finding Identity of a Different Kind
Being adopted usually means that you have no idea about any of your ancestry - I knew just some bits and pieces. Ever since I cut contact with my parents and immersed myself in much-needed trauma therapy, I have felt the pull to find a connection to my past. Maybe it’s the therapy or the fact that I’ll be turning 40 next year.
I did 23andMe years ago (now the company is about to file for bankruptcy - more on that below) and found out that I was close to 78% British/Irish, with the remainder being Polish and French. Last week, I signed up for Ancestry.com, and my whole world opened up. I found photos of great grandparents, tombstones, and yearbook pages, and images of documents like passports, immigration papers, marriage and death certificates, and the list goes on.
I found out that my grandfather on my mom’s side was British and Irish, with his mother being 100% British and his father being 100% Irish. My dad’s side holds direct links to Poland and Quebec.
Did I look for myself in the faces of the photos I was discovering? Yes. As an adoptee, I feel like you are constantly wondering where pieces of your appearance come from. For instance, I have a ton of freckles, and now both my kids have the same ones. Which family member passed down this map of stars?
Favorite Stacks to Read this Week
Since I’ll be traveling in about a week, I loved reading “10 Substackers on How They Travel Fashionably” from Erika Veurink. For red-eyes, especially with two kids in tow, I swear by Vuori performance joggers and any of their hoodies.
Oh, how I love Joanna Goddard and her monthly edits for Big Salad - if you haven’t checked it out already, here is March.
This struck a few different chords for me. Please read “We need community, please stop your cancelling plans” by Vera Hester
March Musings: Light, Loss, and a Salad Dressed in Honey by Karista Bennett. A beautiful tribute to her uncle who just passed, and of course, another recipe I’m drooling over.
Have you ever named it to tame it? This concept from A Little Thing That Helps sounds like a complete game changer!
Stop wearing your winter jacket and start layering!

Once it hits the first day of spring, I put away the winter jacket. Even if the temperature is still 40 degrees in NYC, I refuse to bring the down jacket back out!
My solution? Layering. My inspiration? Women in London and Paris, and their effortless light layering looks that I try to pull off.
I loved reading “7 Chic Outfit Formulas Stylish People in London, Paris and New York Rely On When It's Really, Really Cold” from WhoWhatWear. Even though it’s spring, the suggestions can still be applied!
“Thankfully, the outfit formulas are pretty much as easy to put together as they look, and most revolve around staple pieces that deserve a place in every wardrobe–and which are endlessly versatile, so that you can mix and match to create multiple layered looks. A white t-shirt comes in especially handy, as this year saw renewed appreciation for the go-to minimalist's styling trick of having a crisp white tee peeking out around the neckline of a jumper. It's such an easy way to make knitwear feel fresh. For those looking to push their skills a little further, focus on playing with layered textures, including one of my personal favourite combinations, leather and cashmere. How luxe.”
